Among the esteemed nominees of this years upcoming Hairbrained Awards is Kelle Schlax, a Hair Nerd whose scissors and razors dance to the rhythm of natural textures and classic shapes. With over a quarter-century of experience shaping, coloring, and redefining hair, Kelle's dedication to the craft transcends mere styling; it's a celebration of individuality and the subtle art of bringing out each client's unique beauty.

Kelle's signature technique, razor cutting, is more than just a method—it's a testament to precision, fluidity, and an intimate understanding of hair's natural flow. As we gear up for the Hairbrained Awards, Kelle's work stands as a beacon for aspiring stylists, reminding us that at the intersection of experience and innovation lies the potential to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Could you guide us through the journey of bringing your Hairbrained Awards video to life, from initial concept to final cut?

I was very fortunate to be an educator with Knowledge Destroys Fear for the past few years and we had filmed my razor cut in the education space at The Factory, in San Diego.  My education team mates, Katie Bulter and DJ Muldoon helped me film and strategize my haircutting techniques. It took me a few days to edit the footage we had and I knew I wanted to preview clips of the finished cut throughout the video to help visualize how the technique creates the final shape. My son helped me pick a song for this specific video which makes it extra special to my heart.

What has been the most challenging aspect of creating your nominated work, and how did you overcome it?

I would say the most challenging aspect was making the decision to submit that video.   I loved the finished look a few the doing the actually haircut, I take my craft seriously and was worried of judgement of my peers.  I was encouraged by my friends and coworkers to submit my work and their support gave me the confidence to submit.  So, thanks friends.

What message or advice would you like to share with your peers in the hairdressing community, especially those aspiring to be nominated for future Hairbrained Awards?

Share your art!  You never know who or how you inspire people.

What are your thoughts on the impact of social media and digital platforms in shaping the careers of today's hairdressers and artists?

Pre pandemic, social media played the role as my portfolio to reach new clients.  Once I join the education team, Knowledge Destorys Fear, social media and online platforms were the only way to connect with our community.  We couldn't be in the same room together, so streaming because the only outlet and abled us to reach people anywhere in the world.  I also believe social media is just ONE of the many tools we have in our arsenal to showcase our craft, and can be very inspiring seeing other people's creations and a glimpse into other peoples experiences as a hairdresser.

What role do you see Hairbrained and similar platforms playing in the future of the beauty and hairstyling industry?

These platforms provide a space for hairstylists, beauty professionals, and enthusiasts to connect, share ideas, and learn from each other. These platforms also offer opportunities for education and learning. Many professionals share tutorials, tips, and tricks on Hairbrained, allowing others to expand their knowledge and improve their craft. This democratization of education enables hairstylists to access valuable resources without geographical limitations. Hairbrained and similar platforms serve as a space for collaboration and innovation. Professionals can share their work, seek feedback, and collaborate on projects. This fosters a sense of community and encourages creativity and experimentation.

How can people find out more about you?

I stay current on Instagram @kelledoeshair and just roughly launched kelledoeshair.com and clients can find me at The Lab, @thelabsalon in San Diego, CA
