Her evolution from a high school theater enthusiast to a renowned figure in the world of hairstyling epitomizes the journey of discovery and mastery that lies at the heart of this prestigious event.

Ashlee's approach, which seamlessly weaves together her passions for hair, entertainment, and continuous education, sets an example for her peers and underscores the essence of the Hairbrained Awards. Her anticipation for the upcoming ceremony reflects not just a personal milestone but a celebration of the collective creativity and educational spirit that drive the industry forward.

Could you guide us through the journey of bringing your Hairbrained Awards video to life, from initial concept to final cut?

I have 3 videos nominated. The first one was a razor bob I did in collaboration with Vladimir Sarbashev, the original creator of AirTouch, who did the color. This was an epic weekend as I flew to the LA headquarters for Schwarzkopf USA to meet up with him. I was only 6 weeks postpartum from my 3rd child and my husband accompanied me on the trip with our baby. The second one was filmed in Germany while I was there for Schwarzkopf Essential looks. It’s a dry haircut on a model I had done 6 months prior for SKP Color Crafters. I had one free day so I brought her back for a refresh and filmed the whole thing by myself with a tripod. The last one was part of my 2024 team collection collaboration. We had four model transformations that we filmed in 2 days to trend forecast as an education team.

What has been the most challenging aspect of creating your nominated work, and how did you overcome it?

The greatest challenge in always the time management and pre-planning. As a mother of 3 and traveling independent educator, finding time to go above and beyond with content creation is difficult. But when the investment and circumstances line up, Magic happens!

What are your thoughts on the impact of social media and digital platforms in shaping the careers of today's hairdressers and artists?

As a mom who did hair in the suburbs, social media gave me global exposure that wasn’t technologically possible in prior generations. It broke a glass ceiling for those of us who could not compete with the previous generations “good old boys club”.

How do you balance your creative pursuits and professional growth with the demands of the industry and your personal life?

It’s extremely difficult to travel and teach, work with brands, and to create content. So when I’m home, I’m not working in a salon. I still have a lot of administrative tasks but at least I’m available to my kids and my husband when I’m not in the road.

What message or advice would you like to share with your peers in the hairdressing community, especially those aspiring to be nominated for future Hairbrained Awards?

Creating content is an acquired skill just like hairdressing and it takes practice. You have to be passionate about learning the technology as much as you are about hair. But don’t forget to have fun and make it a creative outlet. Social media is a second job and if it’s not an enjoyable process, you’ll never be consistent.
